Grass Patch Recipe

Have a patchy yard? Try this simple recipe to fill in those bare spots or to seed a larger lawn.

Supplies:
A tub (I use a 30-gallon tote) or a wheelbarrow
Grass seed
Peat Moss or Sawdust
A lid for the tote or a tarp/cover for the wheelbarrow
A hose or a large bucket of water

*Best if used in spring or fall!

Instructions:

  1. Fill your tub/ wheelbarrow with your peat moss/ sawdust.

  2. Add 3lbs of grass seed.

  3. Grab a hose and soak down your mixture WHILE mixing. I put on gloves and just stir with my hands while the water goes into the tub. Your peat moss will take a bit to soak up the water, so mixing takes a bit of time (10-15 minutes).

  4. Once I feel the mixture is soaked and the seed mixed in, I simply cover it with my lid/ tarp.

  5. Store in a warmer place for 5 days. This can either be outside (if it’s fairly warm outside) or in your shed/ garage.

After 5 days, remove the covering. You should see little baby grass sprouts!

6. Next, prepare your patch by gently roughing up the area with a rake or even your foot. You just want the surface to be scratched up to help the seed take root.

7. Just like icing a cake, remove your recipe from the tub and lay a thin layer over your patch. You really can’t mess this part up. Just don’t put it on really thick. If you have some extra, feel free to walk around your yard and sprinkle the mixture on other patchy areas.

8. SIT BACK AND WATCH THE MAGIC! I actually have never watered my grass patch recipes…we get enough rain here in Indiana that I let nature take care of my seedlings. BUT if you live in a dry area (or aren’t expecting rain for another week), go ahead and water your seeds every few days.

TIPS:
👍🏻Stay off baby grass and do not mow it for at least 8 weeks. If it gets long, you can use a weed whacker.
👍🏻Growing grass is best in spring or fall. Avoid planting during the summer. It simply gets too hot!
👍🏻When choosing grass seed, look at the back to see if it is a shade seed or sun-loving seed. Choose based on the area you are trying to patch.
